Free Bully Buster Workshop at DOUVRIS Bank St. — Saturday, September 19
School is back, and so are the situations that come with it. New classes, new social groups, and for some kids, the first few weeks of figuring out who is going to make things difficult.
That is why we are running our Bully Buster Workshop on Saturday, September 19 at the Bank Street dojo. It is free, it is two hours, and it teaches kids simple, practical techniques in a fun and supportive environment.
What Is the Bully Buster Workshop?
Led by Shihan Suba and Sensei Makayla, the session gives students real tools for handling bullying with confidence rather than aggression. Kids spend the two hours on their feet, working through scenarios with other kids their age.
This is not about teaching kids to fight. It is about helping them stand tall, stay calm, and know what to do when it matters. The room is deliberately supportive, because a child who is embarrassed is not learning anything.
What Students Will Learn
The workshop focuses on three core areas rooted in martial arts principles:
Awareness — Spotting a situation early, before it escalates. In karate we call this zanshin, staying alert and present. Students learn to read a room, notice when something is starting, and trust their instincts about it.
De-escalation — Using words, tone, and body language to defuse a confrontation. Martial arts teaches that the best fight is the one you never have. Students practise standing tall, speaking up, and walking away without it feeling like a loss.
Self-Defence — Simple, age-appropriate techniques for the moment walking away is not enough. Drawn from karate fundamentals: easy to remember, easy to do, and built on the confidence of knowing what to do.
Why Martial Arts and Bully Prevention Go Together
Martial arts build more than physical skill. They build the kind of quiet, grounded confidence that changes how a child carries themselves, and that alone is one of the most effective forms of bully prevention there is.
Students who train tend to develop stronger self-awareness, better emotional regulation, and a real sense of personal responsibility. Those are the same qualities that help a kid handle a difficult situation without escalating it or shutting down.
