Word of the Month: Self-Discipline
Every month at Douvris Martial Arts, our students focus on one word that shapes how they train, how they treat others and how they show up outside the dojo. For November, that word is self-discipline.
What self-discipline really means
Self-discipline is doing what needs to be done, even when nobody is asking you to. It is not about being strict or never having fun. It is about keeping a promise to yourself, especially on the days you don't feel like it.
Self-discipline on the mat
In the dojo, self-discipline shows up in small, ordinary moments. It is showing up to class on a cold November night. It is running your kata one more time after everyone else has sat down. It is keeping your eyes on your instructor when you would rather be looking at the clock.
This month, it is everywhere. Our competitors are getting ready for the In-House Tournament on Sunday, November 8th, and the Team Douvris athletes who just represented Canada at the WKC World Championships in Spain got there one practice at a time. Nobody hands you that. You build it.
Practising self-discipline at home and at school
Self-discipline works like a muscle: it gets stronger every time you use it. Here are a few ways families can build it together this month.
- Pick one small habit, like stretching before bed or packing your gear the night before, and stick with it every day this month.
- Do the hard thing first. Finish homework or chores before screens, and notice how much better the rest of the evening feels.
- Practise at home for five minutes a day. A short, steady routine beats one long session once a week.
- Let your child set their own reminder instead of being told. Remembering on their own is the whole point.
- When the habit slips, start again the next day. Self-discipline isn't about never missing a day. It's about coming back.
Once that first habit feels automatic, add the next one. That is how self-discipline becomes part of who you are.
The self-discipline your child builds in the dojo follows them into the classroom, the schoolyard and everywhere else. That is what makes it Bigger Than Karate. OSU!
