Word of the Month: Courage
Every month at Douvris Martial Arts, our students focus on one word that shapes how they train, how they treat others and how they show up outside the dojo. For October, that word is courage.
What courage really means
Courage is not the absence of fear. It is feeling the nerves and stepping forward anyway. Kids often think brave people never feel scared. In reality, the bravest students in our classes are usually the ones who feel nervous and decide to go anyway.
Courage on the mat
In the dojo, courage shows up in a lot of small moments. It is bowing onto the mats for your very first class. It is squaring up with a partner who is bigger than you. It is performing your kata in front of the whole room while your heart is pounding.
October gives everyone a chance to practise it. Some students are testing for their next belt at Grading Day. Some are signing up for their first tournament at our In-House Tournament. And some of our athletes are getting on a plane to compete against the best in the world with Team Douvris at WKC Worlds. Every one of those starts with the same decision: go anyway.
Practising courage at home and at school
Courage grows the same way strength does: one rep at a time. Here are a few ways families can practise it together this month.
- Pick one thing each week that feels a little scary, like raising a hand in class or introducing yourself to someone new, and do it.
- Share a time you felt nervous and did it anyway. Kids learn a lot from hearing that grown-ups feel nerves too.
- Celebrate the attempt, not just the result. Trying something hard is the win.
- Try something new together as a family, whether it is a new food, a new activity or a class side by side.
- Encourage your child to speak up kindly when something isn't right. Standing up for a friend takes real courage.
Once that first thing feels easy, pick the next one. That is how courage becomes a habit.
The courage your child builds in the dojo follows them into the classroom, the schoolyard and everywhere else. That is what makes it Bigger Than Karate. OSU!
